Altadore Real Estate Listings and Information
Named as one of Calgary’s best neighborhoods in 2010, Altadore is located in the deep inner-city portion of the southwest quadrant of Calgary. First established in 1945, this trendy community has come to be known for its’ vibrant nightlife scene and for its’ close proximity to attractions like the River Loop, one of Calgary’s foremost parks on the Elbow River, and to the Marda Loop, which is the largest and often busiest outdoor shopping area in the whole of Calgary. Within the past decade, the community has experienced a gentrification of sorts with the addition of many high-end, luxury semi-detached homes built, which has attracted many young professionals and families as well.
Along with the more than 125 independently owned stores that sit within the Marda Loop at the northern border of Altadore and the trifecta of parks that line the entire eastern border of the community, Altadore is also the home of The Military Museums of Calgary, located at 4520 Crowchild Trail Southwest. Here, you’re able to uncover the victories, tragedies, and sacrifices experienced in the Canadian Forces and learn a little more of Canada’s military involvement in the world within the past hundred years. The museum itself is meant to educate the youth in particular and involves a lot of interaction to it that’s quite uncharacteristic of the prototypical museum. It’s a lot of fun for the family. The cultural scene in Altadore is outstanding with regular events such as the Marda Loop Justice film festival and Marda Gras, a summer-themed street part held every August that attracts more than 35,000 Calgarians to the neighborhood.
The Altadore community contains two schools operated by the Calgary Board of Education. Altadore Elementary, found on 16th street Southwest, serves students from kindergarten to grade six while Dr. Oakley School, located on 20th street Southwest, serves students with learning disabilities from grades 3 to 9. Mount Royal Junior High is the designated junior high for Altadore, after which, Central Memorial High School is designated as the community’s high school. Although there aren’t any schools in Altadore operated by the Catholic school district, students are bussed to the local St. James Elementary and Junior High, and then to the nearby Bishop Carroll High School. There are also a # of private schools in Altadore including the Calgary Waldorf school and the Glenmore Christian Academy.
Amenities are easily accessible with major grocery chains located on the western border and that’s not to mention the local grocers, chic vintage clothing shops, and pubs of the Marda Loop that line the North. Everything you’ll ever need within the community is within walking distance no doubt. There are also bus stops all throughout that line 50th avenue Southwest, 16th street Southwest, 20th street Southwest and 33rd Avenue Southwest that make other areas of the city easily accessible.
Within Calgary, Altadore has proven to be one of its’ more popular communities. No matter where you are within the neighborhood, you’re always within walking distance of a mall strip or a beautiful green. Particularly during the summer months, the community offers a lot in the form of rafting down the Elbow River, one of the larger off-leash dog parks of the inner city, and regular week-end events that keep members of the community coming out. Altadore also has an area redevelopment plan in place that is guaranteed to facilitate much more development in the coming years.
