Deer Run is a small, well-established residential neighbourhood (1978) in Calgary’s southeast and is a mix of properties ranging from single family housing to luxury homes backing onto Fish Creek Provincial Park.
Located on a bend of the meandering Bow River, Deer Run is bordered on the east and south by beautiful Fish Creek Provincial Park. To the north is Deersaxon Circle and the community of Deer Ridge. Bow Bottom Trail to the west and Deerfoot Trail provide quick and easy access to the rest of the city and the airport. Calgary Transit’s extensive LRT system makes commuting to downtown, SAIT and the University of Calgary convenient with stations at Canyon Meadows and Fish Creek.
The community is served by public, Catholic and French immersion schools at the elementary level including Deer Run Elementary, Sam Livingston (Fr.) Don Bosco and St. Cecelia (Fr.). Junior high schools include Wilma Hansen, Fairview (Fr.) Don Bosco and St. Matthew. There are several options for families with designated out- of -district senior high schools that are accessible by bus; Lord Beaverbrook, Bishop Grandin and Dr. E.P Scarlett (Fr.).
It is important to any community to have good access to health care. Calgary’s newest hospital, the South Health Campus serves residents of southeast Calgary and surrounding areas and has begun its phased opening of programs and services and will be fully operational later this year.
Deer Run is a community for all seasons with year round outdoor recreational opportunities for community residents. Nearby Fish Creek Park and the Bow River provide over 20 square kilometres of protected natural green space and an abundance of walking and biking trails. The park has day use sites as well as an Environmental Learning Centre and a restaurant. Man-made Sikome Lake is located in Fish Creek Park with sandy beaches, summertime swimming, shower and restroom facilities plus a concession. Deer Run also has two outdoor ice rinks in the winter as well as two baseball diamonds and a soccer field.
Other recreational facilities nearby include an indoor pool in Canyon Meadows, the Southland Leisure Centre with a spectacular waterpark, wave pool and water slides and the Trico Centre for Family Wellness on Bonaventure Drive to the east.
There is no shortage of amenities in close proximity to Deer Run. The Deer Valley Shopping Centre on Canyon Meadows Drive has over 35 shops and services, while Macleod Trail south provides many big box stores. The Avenida Mall, just north of Deer Run offers services, medical clinics, restaurants, and upscale shops. Southcentre Mall is southeast Calgary’s largest shopping mall with over 190 stores and services, and is minutes away on Anderson Rd S.E.
The Deer Run Community Association operates an active community centre that provides a variety of programs and facilities for residents including a gym with fitness equipment, meeting rooms, and a racquetball court. Incentives for community membership such as the “membership advantage” program offer discounts at local businesses with the purchase of a new community membership which benefit both residents and the community as a whole.
