Map of Lake Bonavista

Established in 1967 by Keith construction, Lake Bonavista was the first community in Canada to be built around an artificial lake. Located in southeast Calgary, Lake Bonavista is an affluent community with a population of approximately 10,000. It is bounded by AndersonRoad on the north perimeter, Macleod Trail to the west, Canyon Meadows Drive to the south Bow Bottom Trail to the east.

The lake and adjacent park provide 52 acres of year round recreation for community residents including fishing, boating and swimming in the summer; skating and tobogganing in the winter months. Membership in the Lake Bonavista Home Owners Association is mandatory when purchasing a home in the community. The Association is responsible for maintaining upkeep of the lake and park facilities. It should be noted that the neighbourhood contains a second manmade lake, Lake Bonaventure which is only accessible from homes built directly around the lake. Homeowners with lake access pay recreation fees to maintain the upkeep of both Lake Bonavista and Lake Bonaventure.

While much of Lake Bonavista’s recreation is focused on the two lakes, there are also many year round outdoor recreation opportunities at Fish Creek Provincial Park which borders Lake Bonavista to the south. There are also two golf courses nearby; Willow Park Golf and Country Club which is a private facility and Maple Ridge Golf Club which is a public course.

Lake Bonavista is well established with mainly single family homes. There are a number of estate lots on the lake that average ¼ acre in size. Mature tree lined streets and a homey atmosphere are attractive features of this desirable community. Close proximity to Macleod Trail and Anderson Road provide easy access to downtown and other parts of the city. The LRT station at Canyon Meadows is a convenient way to reach downtown, SAIT and the University of Calgary.

There are a number of schools in the community including: Andrew Sibbald Elementary, Lake Bonavista Elementary, Sam Livingston Elementary, St. Boniface Elementary, Nickle Junior High School and St. Bonaventure Junior High School. Senior high school students attend designated out-of-community schools at either Dr. E.P. Scarlett (Fr.) or Bishop Grandin. Listings of other public, Catholic and French immersion designated schools can be found here.

Shopping is very convenient for residents of Lake Bonavista. The Lake Bonavista Promenade includes both retail shops and professional services. Southcentre Mall, the largest shopping and professional complex in the area, is a short drive away on Anderson Road. They are many more shopping areas, professional offices and restaurants are along Macleod Trail. In terms of hospitals, Calgary’s newest hospital, the South Health Campus services southeast Calgary communities and will be fully operational later this year. The Rockyview Hospital is a full service facility with emergency services and is located off Heritage Drive and 14th St. S.W.

The Lake Bonavista has a very active community centre as well as a recreation centre with multipurpose rooms, skating rinks, and gym and fitness facility. The Lake Bonavista Community Association offers a variety of sports programs for youth including soccer, tennis, hockey, and even canoeing. The City of Calgary operates an ice rink, the Frank McCool Arena.
