Midnapore is a well-established community of approximately 7,000 in southeast Calgary. It was once unincorporated but as Calgary grew it was annexed in the early 60’s becoming an established residential community in 1977. Historically speaking, two of the churches have been deemed historical sites by the Province of Alberta In addition, the LRT Station at Fish Creek Lacombe is a replica of Midnapore’s original train station.
Midnapore is bordered by Fish Creek Provincial Park on the north and east, Macleod Trail on the west and Sun Valley Blvd on the south. It offers a variety of real estate from affordable starter homes to larger, upscale properties on Lake Midnapore and the edge of Fish Creek Provincial Park. The majority of homes in the community are single detached.
With its own beautifully landscaped 30acre manmade lake and adjacent park, Midnapore has an abundance of year round recreational features; swimming, fishing and boating in summer, and skating and tobogganing in winter. Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Bow River pathway system are adjacent to Midnapore, providing an abundance of recreational opportunities and wildlife viewing.
The shops and services at the Midnapore Mall, and the Mid-Sun community centre are shared by the communities of Midnapore and neighboring Sundance. Nearby Shawnessy Village and Shawnessy Centre offer additional amenities. Access to larger shopping centres, restaurants and professional services is quick and easy via Macleod Trail.
The Mid-Sun community centre offers a variety of programs that include after school and preschool programs, and a variety of sports activities. Special events and celebrations are hosted annually at one the community lakes. The Mid-Sun Community Association is very active in addressing local community concerns and interests, such as being board members of the newly created South Fish Creek Recreation Center.
Midnapore is served by two elementary schools: Mother Teresa and Midnapore Elementary. Beyond the elementary level, students can move on to MidSun School, Fairview (Fr.), Ecole St. Matthew (Fr.), or Father James Whelihan. Senior high school students can attend Centennial High School, Dr. E.P.
