Developed in the 1980’s, Riverbend is an established southeast residential neighbourhood bounded on three sides by the Bow River, which is how it came by the name. Located on a bend in the Bow River, Riverbend has the advantages of three very divergent landscapes – the Bow River escarpment, an upland plain and wooded floodplains. Riverbend residents living along the river experience unlimited wildlife viewing and the beautiful vistas of the Rocky Mountains.

Riverbend has abundant green space and is well connected to Calgary’s extensive pathway system providing recreational opportunities galore. Carburn Park is a large natural park located in the community featuring several ponds, a variety of wildlife and wildflower species as well as an outdoor skating rink in winter.

Riverbend is conveniently located close to major transportation arteries with Glenmore Trail to the north and Deerfoot Trail to the west, providing easy access to downtown Calgary and other parts of the city. Commuters using public transit have the convenience of LRT stations at Chinook and Heritage Drive with lots of parking available.

The community shopping centre, Riverbend Shopping Centre is conveniently located at Glenmore Trail and 18th St. S.E.  Chinook Centre, one of Calgary’s largest shopping centres has over 250 stores, theatres and a large professional centre and is minutes away from Riverbend via Glenmore Trail. Southcentre Mall is just south of Riverbend on Anderson Rd.

Riverbend has one public elementary school, Riverbend Elementary, and a Catholic elementary school – Holy Angels Elementary. Additional designated elementary schools for Riverbend families are: Sam Livingston (FR), St. Cecelia (Fr.) and St. Matthew. Designated junior high schools include: Fairview (Fr), Sherwood, St. Augustine and St. Mathew. High school students can attend Central Memorial (Fr.), Western Canada (Fr.) and Bishop Grandin.

Riverbend is a vibrant community with an active community association that offers programs and activities for all residents, from preschoolers to seniors. Popular activities include martial arts, yoga, skating classes, parent and tot groups and jellybean dances. The community centre is also the meeting place for a number of groups such as Toastmasters, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Youth Justice. The newest addition to the community is a skateboard park which is very popular with younger teens.

Riverbend is an affordable community with a broad selection of homes; over 90% are single detached.  Prices for single family homes average around $483.000. Riverbend has two mobile home parks located on the eastern edge of the community. The population of Riverbend in 2011 was 10,000.
